Diabetes As A Factor In Gum Infection

Complications of diabetes may cause several gums diseases and infections most especially when it is uncontrolled. In diabetes, there is a reduction of blood supply to the teeth caused by thickened blood vessels that impair sufficiency and efficiency of flow of nutrients. As a result of this condition, the gums and bone surrounding the teeth become weak making them susceptible to infection. Another factor also to be considered in diabetes causing gum infection is the fact that high glucose level in the blood and oral tissues promotes the growth of bacteria. The best management for this is to control blood sugar level first, added with good oral hygiene to prevent progression of gum disease leading to periodontitis.
