Prevention of deterioration of the temporomandibular joint and bruxism.

We begin by mentioning the two main measures to prevent bruxism, referring to possible causes of it:

Avoid stressful situations and deal with anxiety, if it suffers on a regular basis.

Remove occlusal disorders that make unstable occlusion: Highly contacts premature to close the mouth or occlusal interference in the jaw movements.

It should also be speaking at this point of preventing the consequences of bruxism: It uses a device called occlusal splint, which snaps into a dental arch, is a kind of platform on which to build the teeth of the other arcade. The support of these teeth on the platform is uniform and balancing the closure of the mouth and jaw movements (hence splints are also used for other tasks). The balance is achieved with splints prevents joints and periodontal consequences of bruxism. As the material of the splint less resistant to the tooth enamel, although the bruxism is occurring when the patient continue to wear the splint, there is no tooth wear, but the splint itself.

The key to preventing problems in the joints is not overloaded, ie in the rest. This also happens in other joints. Therefore, the parafunctions (functioning of the ATM without a physiological utility) are harmful.

Is not fully demonstrated scientifically, but all indications suggest that the malocclusions increase the risk of suffering from temporomandibular disorders: It therefore seems appropriate to try to get a good occlusion. The malocclusions that seem to cause more changes are those which leave no freedom to the jaw in their movements: For example, the lack of highlight among the upper and lower incisors, which remains caught or even delayed the mandible, or the cross-bites make the jaw is caught in a position (which is usually little physiological) by the meshing of two teeth.

Now mention a number of steps to get rest, both functional and psychological:

Avoid opening the mouth too much and not force the muscles to bostezar.

Do not abuse the gum or food very hard, that makes us overloading muscles and joints without a purely functional purpose.

Enough sleep, face up and with body and head in position lined up, and maintain a regular schedule as possible.

Remove the incentives that affect sleep, such as coffee or alcohol.

Avoid stressful situations and make treatment of anxiety (if any).

Usually maintain a position of repose of his mouth: lips together, teeth apart.

Addressing the bruxism as possible, because it is an activity parafunctional.

Of course revisions to the dentist every 6-12 months are useful for the prevention and control of these phenomena.
